Keep Your Pets Flea Free So You Can Enjoy Quality Time Together Year Round!

Posted by benz | Posted in Baby Furniture Seattle Articles | Posted on 01-09-2010

I acknowledge that most people don’t really spend their time pondering the nuances of flea control products like Frontline flea medicine.

During the cold months of the year, we might hole up at home with our pets knitting dog sweaters, watching the snowflakes fall through a frosty window pane, or reading a good book and staying warm by the fire.

As the warmer weather comes, we’re eager to get outdoors and stretch our legs, shed some of that extra winter “padding” and let the light from the sun warm our faces.

One of the things that we might not think about during all of this idyll is the fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and other bugs that may be awakening with the warm weather to come after your pet!

That’s why it can be important to treat your pet for fleas year round with a product like Frontline flea medicine. Frontline Plus, K-9 Advantix for dogs, Advantage for cats – these are all safe and effective flea and tick spray products that will keep the bugs from infesting your cat or dog in the summer. And with year round treatment, will avoid these pets snacking on you and your family when you’re safe at home in winter, too.

Amazing as it seems, fleas and their offspring can have a life cycle that lasts for over 2 years. Once these pests enter your home, the eggs will drop from your dog or cat into your carpet, furniture, bedding and yard – waiting until conditions are favorable to hatch.

With a year-round regimen of Frontline flea medicine for dogs or cats, or another similar product you can kill the adult fleas that infect your pets and stop them from reproducing in your home and yard.

In addition to flea drops, flea shampoos or other flea medication for your pet, it’s important to keep your home free from eggs, when possible.

Frequently launder any dog beds or bedding materials that your dog enjoys resting on. Vacuum your carpet and furniture regularly (with a flea collar in the vacuum bag to prevent fleas from hatching and crawling out of the vacuum) to pick up eggs that may have fallen off of your pet. (Flea eggs aren’t sticky – they are designed to be disbursed throughout the host’s habitat.

Once fleas invade, they can be hard to get rid of, so it’s important to make routine flea and tick prevention a part of your pet’s regular routine. Name brand flea drops, like Frontline flea medicine, Canine Advantix, or Advantage for cats are all products that your vet will recommend because they’re effective and safe. You can also find them cheap online, sometimes for a discounted price.

However, as with any new flea medication or product, keep an eye on your pet when you apply the flea control, to make sure there are no adverse reactions. If there are, talk to your vet, and experiment with a different product that may be better for your dog or cat.

When I was in my twenties and thirties, I was a school teacher. I lived and worked overseas. I had many great adventures, but looking back two decades later, I can see that what I most enjoyed about those years was the lifestyle I had as a young mom in my neighborhood in Adelaide, South Australia. We enjoyed the best of a modern Western life without some of the “excesses” of 21st century life in the United States-not too much driving, not too much “stuff”, not too much debt…You get the picture. I had a cute little car which was fuel efficient. I had a cute little house and lovely English style garden. I shopped in my neighborhood, because, believe it or not, there wasn’t a supermarket or mall within 5 miles of the neighborhood where I lived.

What I loved most about how my money was spent in those days was that it mainly supported local people and products. My food came from small, family-owned fruit and veggie shops, butcher shops, and bakeries. All of my fruit and vegetables were grown locally and sold in the shops in my local “high street” or in the year-round farmers’ market. Many things I take for granted today like my washer and dryer, my living room furniture and my office equipment were far more expensive in Adelaide than they were in Seattle, for instance. But, we purchased from local merchants, bought quality to last and often recycled and shared. For months when my neighbor had a new baby, we shared the expense of a diaper service and we shared the use of my new washing machine. When another neighbor moved to a new job in another state, we bought their antique dining table and chairs to furnish our cottage’s kitchen dining area.

So, why am I telling you this story of a past life in another country?

Because–I think we have forgotten that we have the power to shape our lives with the choices we make and how we spend our money. I suppose we think we have to give up things we find “necessary” to save our environment, when really we might find that new choices result in pleasant gains.

At the heart of many of our environmental challenges today are the things we Americans buy and discard every day. Our economy is seemingly stronger the more we buy and the faster we replace things. Living a more environmentally aware lifestyle affects all aspects of our lives, but none more dramatically than our shopping habits.

There are many ways to turn your buying behavior into a force that supports environmentally friendly businesses and practices:

Choose the shop around the corner:

More and more, we’re hearing that carbon dioxide emissions from our cars are polluting the earth and contributing enormous quantities of greenhouse gases to the growing climate change problem. To reduce your carbon footprint, choose to shop close to home. Need some new candles? Check out the local artisan’s workshop. Looking for some fresh veggies? Look into your community’s farmers’ markets. You get the idea.

BYOB:

By that, we mean “bring your own bag” when you’re heading for the store. Whether you’re in the market for groceries or a new pair of pants, try to remember to take your reusable shopping bag with you. This cuts down on the annoying “paper or plastic?” questions and will mean fewer resource-intensive bags entering your community where they either need to be discarded in a landfill or burned in an incinerator.

Choose eco-friendly products:

Regardless of what you’re putting in your bag, whether it’s a new printer for your computer or some binders for your children’s new school year, there’s likely a more eco-friendly option available. Wondering what to look for? Here are few characteristics of earth-mindful options:

Look for second-hand or used items. These products require no new resources except the gas it takes you to get to the store. Furniture, clothing, kitchen items, and even electronics can often be purchased this way.

Search for items made with recycled materials. The most obvious option is recycled-content paper, but more and more there are products made of recycled products. Soda bottles can be made into fleece for clothing, tires can be turned into playground equipment, milk jugs can be turned into shingles for your roof, yogurt containers are made into toothbrushes and razors, and old barn wood can be transformed into one-of-a-kind tables and chairs.

Check out alternative materials. If you can’t find something that’s once-used like those that are second-hand or made of recycled materials, look for options made with eco-friendly materials. This can mean many things, but here are a few principles to keep in mind: Materials grown without the use of pesticides and fertilizers mean less harm to water and soil, so go for organic fruits, vegetables, and cotton products. Any resource that’s renewable is more sustainable than non-renewable options. Metals, plastics, and other petroleum by-products are not ultimately renewable (not to mention they’re production is incredibly polluting). Bamboo, hemp, sea grass, and jute, to name a few, are incredibly fast growing plants that can be used to construct furniture and rugs, clothing and bedding, and much more. Opting for the item made with fewer chemicals is always a good choice, too. It means it’ll be less harmful for you and the earth. So if you’re debating between stain-resistant shirts and those without, go for the more natural, less-treated option. Look for low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) products, natural cleaning products, and so on.

Choose “kid safe” and “pet safe” household products.

Opting for the item made with fewer harmful or potentially harmful ingredients is not only earth-friendly, but also “kid safe” and “pet safe”. Look for household products without the following common but harmful chemicals as ingredients: Naphthalene, kerosene, formaldehyde, phenol, cresol, lye, hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, petroleum distillates, benzene, ammonia, paradichlorobenzene, sodium hydroxide, butyl cellosolve, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid.

Look for concentrated products:

Every bottle of laundry detergent and household cleaner that contains more water than active ingredients cost fuel and human labor to ship to a store near you. Purchase your household products as concentrates and add the water at home.

Look for water- and energy-saving devices:

Choosing products that reduce your consumption of water and energy will not only save you money, they reduce your overall earthly-impact. So go for bathroom and kitchen fixtures and appliances that conserve, opt for electronics that run more efficiently, and upgrade things like light bulbs and faucet aerators to keep your home running on less. A good bet for many of these products are ENERGY STAR rated options since they save significant quantities of both of these resources.

Reduce overall consumption:

Perhaps the most important change you can make in your shopping habits is to buy less. When you’re in the store trying to decide between two great books, or contemplating whether you want green or white sheets, evaluate whether you really need the item in question. Are there ways you can reuse something at home for that purpose? Perhaps you can share a lawnmower with your neighbor, or take books out of the library instead of buying new. There are lots of ways to enjoy the better things in life without taking something new home.

Gifts for Scrooges: Fun + Function

Posted by benz | Posted in Baby Furniture Seattle Articles | Posted on 30-08-2010

Q. “I’m just getting my business going, after being last off last year. So the lasthing I want is a silly twenty-dollar jokegift. A year ago, it would have been great. Now all I can think is, ‘I could use a couple of twenty-dollar-bills right now.’” Signed: New Scrooge

A. Many of us have friends who are cutting back rather than racing forward. Some may be stressed out by cash flow crunches of a new business. Others have experienced personal losses. If they’re feeling scroogier than ever, we can understand.

You don’t have to limit your gifts to socks and underwear (although a good friend may welcome woolly socks from Eddie Bauer or a treat from Victoria’s Secret). So, by request, here are tips on combining fun and function for the holiday season.

DON’T send a free e-card! Many of those sites collect email addresses for their own nefarious uses.

DO send gift certificates: for a restaurant — even a pizza delivery service for amazon.com, magellan.com and other online boutiques for an office supply house — Staples, Kinkos, OfficeMax

Tip: A friend is moving? Send her a gift certificate for a store or restaurant in her new city. Send a season ticket for theatre, ballet, symphony or basketball — get him out of the house! (from my book, Making the Big Move)

DO send gifts for pets. Catnip, pet beds, and gift certificates for grooming all work well. I have one dog bed in each room and Keesha never, ever tries to sit on the furniture.

DO send coffee for caffeine fiends, wine for connoisseurs and Florida fruit baskets for the healthy-minded. My Seattle friends sent fresh-roasted beans one year. Mmm!

DO respect boundaries. Some people want to be alone on holidays, especially if they’re single, newly moved or mourning a loss. Keep it low-key: “If you don’t want to come for dinner, come by for coffee afterward– if you feel like it. Don’t bring a present. Do bring the dog.”

And I’ll share a secret. Just about every single person I know welcomes a take-home serving of holiday dinner. We always pretend it’s for the cat. See my article on “being single on holidays.”

And what if you’re the one who’s cutting back? Maybe this is a tough year and you’re not feeling much holiday spirit. Maybe you lost a friend or family member, temporarily or permanently. Or you’re getting over the flu.

There are no easy bromides. Some people create their own rituals. Some find comfort in the old rituals they know so well. Do as much as you can, comfortably. Whenever I say, “I just don’t feel like it this year,” I usually wish I had — one year later.

One tip: Write down your experiences, feelings and wishes. Hide your writing for at least six months. A year from now the world will look very, very different.

Ray Charles – Pianist, Singer & All Around Musical Genius

Posted by benz | Posted in Baby Furniture Seattle Articles | Posted on 29-08-2010

0

Ray Charles was born Ray Charles Robinson on the 23rd of September, 1930 in Albany, Georgia. He was the son of poor parents. His life was a tragic story. He and his family were plagued by poverty. His mother had to bring up both him and his brother on her own. When he was five, he was witness to a mishap due to which his younger passed away after he drowned in a laundry tub.

Ray Charles started becoming blind when he was five. Two years later by age seven, he was completely blind. Though there is no confirmed reason, as to why he lost his sight, the two probable reasons why he could have lost his sight is either due to glaucoma (an optic nerve disease) or from an infection in his eyes from soap water that was not treated in time.

He studied in St Augustine School for the Deaf and The Blind. During his school years, tragedy stuck when his parents died – his father two years after his mother. Before he was out of school, he was able to write music and play a number of musical instruments. Well before he was out of school, he was gigging with bands which played varied styles of music. One such stunt with a band called The Florida Playboys is from where he caught on with the style of always wearing shades.

In 1947 at age 17, he moved to Seattle. He was signed to Swingtime Records and had his first hit Confession Blues with them in 1949. Confessing Blues was his only hit with Swingtime Records other than the 1951 recorded number Baby, Let Me Hold Your Hand. Confession Blues reached the no 2 spot on the R&B charts.

In 1952, he signed with Ahmet Ertegun’s record label Atlantic Records. He scored big early in the deal with two huge hits in 1953 – Mess Around (composed by Ahmed Ertegun) and It Should Have Been Me. His 1955 song I Got A Woman topped the charts. A string of hits – Drown in My Own Tears. This Little Girl of Mine, The Night Time (Is The Right Time), Mary Ann and Lonely Avenue – which were released all the way up to 1959. He conquered more group with his improvised hit What I’d Say when it made the top ten on the pop charts.

After four years with Atlantic, he got a better deal with ABC which made him switch labels. His time with ABC saw him make a successful crossover in pop music with Hit The Road Jack, Unchain My Heart and Georgia On My Mind. It was with the ABS that released the landmark album in 1962 Modern Sound in Country and Western Music and its sequel Vol. 2.

He was arrested of heroin possession in 1965. He managed to get himself out a jail sentence, by opting to go to rehab. While recuperating, he continued to have hits. Crying Time reached the No. 6 spot on the charts. Georgia On My Mind was made the state song of Georgia. He further etched himself into history by rendering America The Beautiful on TV – the version of the song which is the most revered.

In 1980, he made a cameo in the film The Blues Brothers. He appeared in a Coca Cola advertisement in the early 1990’s and said “You Got the Right One Baby“. He graced two Presidential occasions – Ronald Reagan’s second and Bill Clinton’s first inauguration.

Ray Charles continued to be active until his death on the 10th of June, 2004. In 2002, he was part of a Rome peace concert – the first event in the Colosseum since AD 404. Ray Charles was inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame by his fan blues singer Van Morrison with whom he sang Moondance. He gave his last performance on the 30th of April, 2004 singing the two songs he is most known for – America The Beautiful and Georgia On My Mind, at the dedication ceremony of his music studio in Los Angeles.

His album aptly titled “Genius & Friends” was released two months after he passed away. It had him collaborating with many singers whom he personally choose. An album with the accompaniment of the Count Basie orchestra followed – Ray Sings, Basie Swings.

Why The Pacific North West?

Posted by benz | Posted in Baby Furniture Seattle Articles | Posted on 28-08-2010

0

“Why would you want to move to the Pacific North West?”, I was once asked over the phone by my friend from back east. “Doesn’t it rain there all the time?” I smiled as I squinted in the bright sunshine, attempting to answer this question.

Rainfall seems the last thing to think about in the scenic and diverse Pacific North West region. There is such a plethora of recreation that everyone is too busy planning the next weekend’s activities to even check out the Internet weather. Still it got me thinking, why does everyone think we live in the rain?

Surprisingly, statistics tell us that we get even less rainfall here than in New York! In fact some areas of the Pacific North West are described as ‘arid’ or ’semi-arid’!

Residents, both young and old, of the Pacific North West enjoy spending lots of their time in the great outdoors. Shorts are the norm, even in winter, and barbecuing is always popular. We even have our own style of real estate, known as West Coast style, full of tall, angular windows and red cedar decks!

Perhaps one reason that the climate is secondary to us residents of the Pacific North West is because we feel we have the best of everything. Even in the winter, we can ski, snow board and frolic in the snow and then sail, or cruise, play in the sand, fish, hike and climb mountains – and all on the same day.

Hiking and camping are great favorites over here. With the giant firs framing views of the mountain peaks there is always a good panorama around the next corner! We have more than our share of mountains (sorry folks!) including Mount Rainier at over 14,000 feet high. As well as five mountain ranges we have four National Parks in the region. For history buffs, we can date ourselves back several centuries and there are still buildings to explore that are over a century old.

If we tire of the countryside, we are lucky to have two of the slickest cities in North America to amuse ourselves in. Seattle and Portland have everything a person could ever want, from sport to music to art. The events that are held in this area are too varied to mention, although the most famous one is the 24 day Seattle International Film Festival.

All sports are well represented in Pacific North West, with Seattle being the first American hockey team to win the coveted Stanley Cup (in 1917).

Enough people keep wanting to move here and that has kept the population growth up – and made the real estate a good investment. As we are largely coastal, this is a great retirement place and Seattle is expecting its share of baby boomers to flock West and push the prices up even more in the next few years. (Baby boomers will start to reach the retirement age of 65 in 2011, so its not too late for a bargain home!)

If you think that we are all outdoor buffs, I should tell you that Seattle is the most educated city in the USA! Nearly 50% of our residents aged over 25 have at least one degree. Seattle has been ranked by ‘Expansion Magazine’ to be among the top ten cities to have a climate favorable to business expansion.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention it; Seattle is the birthplace of grunge music.

5 Great Ways to Make a Baby’s Nursery More Stimulating

Posted by benz | Posted in Baby Furniture Seattle Articles | Posted on 26-08-2010

0

A baby’s mind is constantly developing and absorbing things from its environment like a sponge. You’ll want to make sure a child’s nursery is a space that engages their mind and senses, and encourages their learning. Speak to your Seattle interior designer about these five great ideas that can help make a child’s nursery more stimulating.

1. Themed room Pick a theme for the child’s nursery that relates to something you hope they will become familiar with from an early age. Some popular ideas are animals (a farm or safari theme), the alphabet and numbers, the ocean and ocean dwellers, seasons or night and day. Speak to your interior designer about ways to incorporate them into your room’s decor, e.g., through wallpaper, borders, having a mural painted and finding corresponding accessories like lampshades, blinds and painted dressers.

2. Decorate the ceiling In its early months, a baby spends a lot of time on its back looking up towards the ceiling. Make use of this space – perhaps have contrasting colored patterns painted onto it or even a mural of the morning or night sky. You could choose several different designs depending on what each part of the room is used for, e.g., a plain design may be needed in the space where baby falls asleep. You can also add stimulating accessories like mobiles or hanging toys to certain areas.

3. Create a library Reading is a wonderful way to stimulate intelligence. Begin your child’s interest in books from a young age by incorporating a library into your nursery. You might opt to have a few shelves of books put up or maybe a few book cabinets erected. Perhaps add a rug or a rocking chair that you and your child can settle on while enjoying the library’s books.

4. Define spaces You’ll want your nursery to be both a stimulating environment and a calming space where your baby can be soothed during nap and bedtimes. Define areas in the room where baby can go to be stimulated and those where they can unwind and be put to sleep. In stimulating areas, the decor can include mobiles, colorful walls designs and items such as a play mat for tummy time. In calming areas, the decor can incorporate soothing colors, dim lighting, and furniture such as a rocking chair for bonding time between parent and baby.

5. Toys and more toys! Toys can be enjoyed at all ages, are visually stimulating to even a newborn and will also add another dimension to your decor if you want to display them in your nursery. If you have a themed room, you might choose to fill the room with toys relating to the theme. You may also want a designated area, perhaps a toy box or cupboard, where you can store toys at the end of the day. Ask your Seattle interior designer how you might incorporate toys into your chosen decor.

How to Protect Leather Furniture From Cat Clawing

Posted by benz | Posted in Baby Furniture Seattle Articles | Posted on 25-08-2010

0

Leather furniture offers a wonderful advantage over fabric based furniture in that it’s easier to clean. Dust and mites don’t become embedded in it as they can with fabric based furniture. But what if you have a cat?

Cats love to scratch and sink their claws into fabric and soft surfaces. It just comes naturally to them. Cats and leather furniture are fairly incompatible. Since leather is a hide from an animal and still contains odors from the animal, a cat may find it irresistible. You cat may have the urge to “knead” the furniture to cover up the scent with its own.

If you own a cat and are considering leather furniture, you may want to think again. If you own leather furniture and are considering getting a cat, here are some options you can take to prevent the cat from clawing the furniture.

Cover up the Sofa or Chair

One way to prevent damage to your leather furniture from a cat is to cover it up. The cover must be fairly thick so the cat’s claws will not penetrate the leather underneath. Furthermore, it must be tight fitting so it won’t be pulled off by kitty’s claws. You can remove the cover for company and replace it when you’re not around to keep an eye on things.

Cover the Cat’s Claws

Another approach is to cover the cat’s claws. You can use a product called “Soft Paws” which are dense rubberized tight fitting covers for your cat’s claws. You will need to put them on all four feet to be effective. Most cats don’t like these, but will get used to them after a few days. This is considered a humane approach to de-clawing. But like declawing, it will render you cat defenseless if it roams out of doors.

Use a Cat Deterrent Product

Another approach is a cat deterrent like the product “SSScat”. This is a humane spray product that is activated by motion detection. Strategically place the spray around your furniture and the furniture will be “off limits”. Cats simply do not like things sprayed at them! This product can be used in other ways too; like keeping kitty away from the fish tank for example.

Keep Alternatives Around

Make sure your cat has plenty of other things to scratch on such as well placed scratching posts around the house. Many cats will simply be happy with this arrangement and leave the furniture alone.

Just Observe

Some cats simply don’t like the feel of leather and avoid it completely. The only way you will know if your cat is a “leather lover” or not is to watch it carefully when you first get the cat (or the furniture).

As a cat owner and a leather furniture owner, you will need to face the fact that you have a possible conflict here. If you can’t use any of these tips, you may have to choose between the two.

Reducing Injury With Childproofing

Posted by benz | Posted in Baby Furniture Seattle Articles | Posted on 18-08-2010

Childproofing Your Home

No home can be completely “childproof,” but there are simple ways to greatly reduce the risk of harm to your child. By removing the greatest threats – household poisons, burn hazards, sources of falls and injuries – you can create a much safer environment for your children.

Take a few minutes to check for some of the most common sources of injury:

Secure Household Poisons

• Know your poison. Toxins and household cleaners are not the only source of poison in your home; common household products like perfumes, hair care products and nail polish remover are also poisonous and a great risk

to small children who like to taste everything they get their hands on.

• Install safety latches on cupboards and drawers in reach of a child.

• Use “Mr. Yuk” stickers and teach toddlers that means DON’T TOUCH!

• Put the Poison Control number, 1-800-222-1222, on or near every home telephone and save it on your cell phone. The line is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Keep Medications Out of Your Child’s Reach

• Use child proof caps on all medications.

• Dispose of outdated medication safely.

• Always keep medicine in its original container.

• Don’t call medicine “candy” or tell children it tastes good.

Guard Against Burns and Fire Hazards

• Scalding from hot liquids or steam cause more burns than fire in young children. Use the back burners on your stove and never let handles be in reach.

• Use temperature controls on water heaters to prevent accidental burns from hot water – 120 degrees Fahrenheit or below.

• Make sure your smoke detectors are working, and keep a fire extinguisher handy.

• Don’t leave the stove or candles unattended.

• Do not hold a baby while cooking or handling hot pots.

Minimize the Risk of Injuries

• Install gates at the top of stairs where babies and toddlers can tumble.

• Insert outlet protectors to help prevent electrocution.

• Don’t leave cords for kitchen or bathroom appliances dangling where a child can pull on them.

• Remove glass-top tables and use guards on sharp corners and edges of furniture.

• Remove or replace cord for blinds or curtains, or cut them in half, as they may cause strangulation.

• Secure heavy furniture that could topple, like book cases and TV stands.

Drowning

• Have a locked fence around pools, and never leave a bathtub that has water in it unattended.

• An open toilet or cleaning bucket with just a few inches of water can be equally dangerous if a child tumbles in. Install a lid lock on all toilets.

While all of these ideas can help, nothing replaces constant adult supervision. For more ideas on keeping your child safe, talk to your pediatrician or family medicine doctor. If you live in the Seattle area contact the Polyclinic at their website at Polyclinic Website for more information.
